Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the world famous Clifton Suspension Bridge is a magnificent feat of Victorian engineering and an enduring symbol of the City of Bristol.

The story of the bridge began in 1754 when wine merchant William Vick left £1,000 in his will to build a stone bridge across the Avon Gorge - but it would be over 70 years before the laying of the first foundation stone and over 30 more before the bridge was declared open.

Join Susannah Harker (Pride and Prejudice, Waking the Dead, Dr. Who) as she takes you through the turbulent history of a project that began as a challenge to build the highest and longest bridge in the world and ended as a fitting tribute to one of the greatest engineers the world has ever known.
